Congressional Visits Day – Registration closed

Congressional Visits Day (CVD) is set for April 6-7, 2011, in Washington, DC.  CVD is a two-day annual event that brings scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, technology executives and students to Capitol Hill to raise visibility and support for science, engineering, and technology.  CVD is open to Material Advantage Student Members at a US-based university, and registration is free of charge. 

The benefits of having students attend CVD are:

• To emphasize the long-term importance of supporting research and development in materials science and engineering to the Nation through meetings with congressional decision makers. 
• To show a better balance between society professional members and students. 
•  To promote networking between members and students.
• To give students the opportunity to attend The George E. Brown, Jr. Award for Science-Engineering-Technology Leadership reception on the evening of April 6th. The George Brown Award is given to a member of Congress who has shown:
  1. Active leadership in the determination of SET policy
  2. Strong public advocacy in support of a role for the federal government in research
  3. Specific actions taken to advance SET public policy

REGISTER BY FEBRUARY 15, 2011  (All CVD participants must complete a registration form.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note that there may be restrictions on the number of students able to attend from any one chapter. This will be determined after all registrations are received. Registrations are honored on a first come, first served basis.

Travel Grants
The Material Advantage Student Program is offering a limited, fixed number of travel grants to help offset costs to Congressional Visits Day.

For universities with a Material Advantage Student Chapter:
One travel grant will be issued per student chapter regardless of the number of students who attend. The amount of travel grant funds will be known once applications are received but may be between $400-$500.  

The Chapter Travel Grant Application needs to be completed by the Material Advantage Faculty Advisor of the student chapter.

For universities without a Material Advantage Student Chapter:
Some universities do not have a Material Advantage Student Chapter but may have individual Material Advantage Student members who wish to attend CVD. Only one student from a non-MA chapter university is eligible for travel assistance. The amount of travel grant funds will be known once applications are received but may be between $100-$150.

The Individual Travel Grant Application needs to be completed by the Material Advantage Student Member at a university without a student chapter.

All travel grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis, so act early! Chapter and individual student members must be active and in good standing to be eligible for a travel grant. Travel grant applications are due by February 15, 2011.
