The Membership Challenge is a recruitment contest between student chapters occurring October 1-31 and March 1-31 each year. This contest is intended to challenge student members to recruit new Material Advantage Student Members. Contest winners receive recognition and prizes for the most creative strategies and the highest percentage increase in chapter membership.

Most Creative Recruitment Strategies ~ $250
Chapters must submit a record of the month’s recruitment activities and programs. A one-page description of the recruitment strategies used as well as photographs that show the chapter spirit, recruitment activities, and/or new members should be included. The chapter that implements the most creative program to recruit new members while achieving a minimum 15% increase in membership will win this contest. An article recognizing the chapter may be published in the American Ceramic Society Bulletin, Iron & Steel Technology, Advanced Materials and Processes, ASM News and JOM’s Professional Preface. The winning chapter also receives $250.

Most Students Recruited ~ $500
The chapter with the highest percentage of membership increase during the Membership Challenge may be recognized in the American Ceramic Society Bulletin, Iron & Steel Technology, Advanced Materials and Processes, ASM News and JOM’s Professional Preface. The winning chapter will also receive $500.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage undergraduate students to present their undergraduate research experiences and to improve their communication skills. The poster entered must be the work of an undergraduate and completed during the undergraduate education of the student. The work presented in the poster does not have to be performed at the student’s home institution, but could be, for example, from a project performed as part of a co-op experience, a summer internship, or a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project.

The contest is open to any area of materials science and engineering. These posters must be submitted separately from the general poster session and will not be listed in the MS&T program or on the Web site. Students who enter the contest must register for and attend MS&T 2010.

All posters must be entered by September 24, 2010 to be eligible for the contest.

Download rules of procedure and grading sheets to use in judging your local contest. Note that the subject of the presentations for the national contest must be technical. The presentation time should be from six to eight minutes. Your local contest, which must have at least two contestants, should be directed by a faculty member.

All local contest winners must be received by September 24, 2010 to be eligible to participate in the national contest. Use the winner reporting form to report your winners.
