The Hydrogen Education Foundation announced Designing a Hydrogen Community, the theme for the 5th annual Hydrogen Student Design Contest. This annual Hydrogen Student Design Contest challenges university students to design hydrogen energy applications for real-world use. The Contest showcases the talents of students in many disciplines, including engineering, architecture, marketing, and entrepreneurship.
This year, teams of undergraduate and graduate students will be challenged to plan and design the basic elements of a hydrogen community in Southern California. Those basic elements address key aspects of the community: production and use of hydrogen. Specifically, the students will identify ways to produce hydrogen renewably using local resources, early customers for that hydrogen (ahead of hydrogen vehicles) and then a repeatable design for local hydrogen fueling stations to accommodate new hydrogen cars and buses.
The Grand Prize winning team will be invited to present their design to experts in a keynote session of the NHA Hydrogen Conference and Expo in Long Beach, Calif. from May 3-6, 2010. Honorable Mention prize winners are also invited to present their designs in the poster presentations component of the conference. Cash prizes and awards are presented to the winning teams.
Register your team today for the 2010 Hydrogen Student Design Contest! Registration is open until Jan. 22, 2010. There is no fee for participating and all college and university students worldwide are invited to compete. For more information, visit www.hydrogencontest.org/contest.asp.
The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program is accepting applications for its 2010 fall session. This Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies-consisting of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council-is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy. Fellows develop basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.
Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research in any social/behavioral science, medical/health discipline, physical or biological science, any field of engineering, law/business/public administration or any relevant interdisciplinary field within the last five years are eligible to apply.
The program takes place in Washington, D.C. and is open to all U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who meet the criteria. However, non-U.S. citizens must be currently enrolled in a U.S. university and have proof of holding a valid J-1 or F-1 status. The fall session is scheduled for August 30 through November 19, 2010.
The deadline for applications is May 1 for the fall program. A stipend grant award of $8,240 will be provided for the 12-week session to offset expenses.
Visit www.national-academies.org/policyfellows for details on criteria, application instructions, and access to the online application and reference forms. Please note the requirement for submission of an online reference from a mentor/adviser.
The Journal of Undergraduate Materials Research (JUMR) is an annual publication from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Virginia Tech which publishes only undergraduate research papers that are selected based on a rigorous peer-review process. Since its inception in Oct. 2005, this journal has been organized and run by the graduate students in MSE, with the assistance of undergraduate students from the Department of English. JUMR will be releasing its fourth volume in Spring 2010. This volume features a music-inspired project that connects the field of engineering with art through a collaborative learning effort between two universities and industry.
More information about JUMR can be accessed at www.jumr.mse.vt.edu or by emailing the board at jumr@mse.vt.edu.
Apart from the publication, JUMR showcases undergraduate research by organizing an annual symposium at MS&T. Visit the MS&T web site for more information regarding the JUMR symposium. The deadline to submit abstracts has been extended to March 29, 2010.
